Tarot Card Interpretation & Meaning - The Minor Arcana: Swords
The Tarot suit of Swords is often equated with conflict, but like everything else to do with the Tarot, that’s not a hard and fast rule. The swords are associated with the element of air according to the majority of Tarot decks, and thus, astrologically with the zodiac signs of Gemini, Aquarius, and Libra. The conflict that the swords speak of is not necessary open warfare, nor physical conflict, or even open arguments. It can point merely at people who are opinionated and/or forceful, uncomfortable situations, or even an entrenched aspect of society or inner conflict that someone is experiencing.
The swords are the realm of the mind, rationality, and thought. Of course, the mind, like a sword, can be used for good or for ill, just as the air element can be a pleasant breeze on your face or dangerous high wind that can literally kill you.
In terms of the physicality of people who tend to be represented by the swords cards, in general their coloring, both hair and complexion-wise, tends to be toward the darker end of the spectrum. Eye color tends to trend toward the darker hazels to dark brown, but as noted elsewhere, opinion on this coloration differs, and the reader should develop their own sense of what is generally indicated with regard to people in their readings. Any guideline at most for something this nebulous will be accurate about 70% of the time at most.
As with other suits, assessing who might be represented by a card of swords in literal life will likely have more to do with the person’s inner qualities. In a swords person, one might expect to find (among other potential traits):
• Sharp analytical skills
• A logical bent
• Higher than average intelligence
• Forthrightness
• Forcefulness
• Rigidity
Although in many decks the artwork on the cards may at first glance look dark or even foreboding and dangerous, the truth is that there are very many positive qualities embodied in the swords suits (as well as by so-called swords people.) When a sword card turns up, don’t be fearful. Consider what there is to be learned by you or the querent.
